Known to many as the DJ Mother of Groningen, the fierce feminist and unapologetic Coco Coquelicot is far more than just a selector behind the decks. As one of the first female professional DJs to emerge from the north of the Netherlands, she has become a driving force in the city’s underground and queer culture. Since the very beginning in 2014 she has combined club culture with community building, activism, and care. As co-founder and chair of Relate Radio she created a platform that amplifies underrepresented voices and nurtures overlooked talent from the niche. Her experience in organising and commitment to safer, more inclusive nightlife events has made her an influential figure in the cultural landscape of the North. Coco’s style is defined by patience, technical precision and thick, groovy basslines. Her sets unfold gradually, carefully building tension while she edges the audience. When she finally releases the dancers, she keeps the warm sound but combines it with harder, relentless rhythms. Her sound is driving, spirited, and rooted in jazz, deep house and Detroit techno. As a persistent digger with an ear for the unexpected, she can move flawlessly between genres, timeless records, overlooked gems and unknown artists. She’s never afraid to try out new sounds, and keeps her dedicated followers on their toes.
